Based on philosophical and Daoist beliefs, Xianxia—or simply cultivation—is an art Mingyue has dedicated his life to. It involves precise skills in swordsmanship, a noble mindset and the urge to be one with the universe’s way instead of fighting it. Similar to its practice in the ancient Lan clan, skills acquired thanks to determined cultivating styles and honorable manner will solely be used to exorcise evil and aid people in need.

Like a willow bending in the wind, Mingyue strives towards serenity and good deeds, all while maintaining an open heart and honoring both his last name’s long cultivation heritage and his given name’s meaning; to be as strong and guiding as the bright moon. His eternal companion, protected by a strikingly jade green sheath whenever not in use and adorned with metal details resembling rabbits, was engraved with the name 融霜, or Róngshuāng—to melt frost. Together, they strive towards a better world, no matter whether the modern human might ridicule them.

Given into the care of his martial master as a toddler, Mingyue doesn’t remember a lot about his biological parents. His father was from the Lan clan, though he didn’t practice any of the ancient cultivation techniques, his mother a kind but quiet person. The grandmaster—someone who had successfully cultivated her mind and body to reach immortality—was accepting of him and took him in as her own when his parents decided they couldn’t care for him anymore. Even though Mingyue might now refer to the grandmaster as his mother, their bond is colored by deep respect and authority.
From a very young age, Mingyue was taught the basics of cultivation: devotion, discipline and righteousness. He advanced quickly, being an intelligent and open-hearted person. As the grandmaster’s only student, he took humble pride in his upbringing. Though, after years of excelling in swordsmanship, musical and artistic cultivation alike, he decided to pursue a bigger dream: the world.
Being raised in seclusion with no social life had Mingyue yearn for connection. So, with nothing but his nobility and his hand clasped around Róngshuāng’s handle, he sought out community. Though only 16 at the time, his mind was ahead of his physical form. There was no doubt in either his or his martial mother’s minds that he couldn’t survive in the real world.
Outside of the temple’s borders, modern society’s people were confused upon meeting him—but not displeased. He assimilated slowly, his eyes full of wonder and his fragile heart open for change. Daoist robes were discarded for more time-appropriate clothing, his hair was cut shorter. Against all odds, Mingyue traveled the world to his heart’s content. For half a decade, he was accompanied by a close friend—a man not much older than him. Tragically, their shared path was cut short when the other man succumbed to his illness, refusing any further care from Mingyue’s cultivation abilities.
Nowadays, Mingyue can be found all over the globe, helping troubled people and painting landscapes in dark ink. He aims to be everything and nothing at once; a light breeze passing through town, a tree offering shade.
